About Woodblock Prints

Woodblock prints are one of the oldest of all forms of printmaking. In simplest terms, a woodblock print is made by carving out a design from the flat surface of a piece of wood, applying ink to the remaining surface - by a roller or a brush - and then pressing a piece of paper - by hand or a press - onto the inked surface. The piece of paper with the ink transferred onto it is a woodblock print, a piece of original art.

Woodblock prints are made either by printing from one block for a single color print; or printing from several blocks, using a separate color for each block (multi-block prints); or by printing from the same block for each successive color, cutting more parts of the block away after each color is printed (reduction prints).
